Abstract
1470365 Thermal switches OTTER CONTROLS Ltd 13 May 1974 [28 June 1973 3 July 1973 22 Oct 1973] 21101/74 21102/74 and 21103/74 Divided out of 1470366 Heading H1N [Also in Division H5] To reduce heat loss from a snap-acting bimetal 23 and thus make the immersion heater overheating switch respond more rapidly, the bimetal 23 which when cold engages a flat or dished metal head plate 2 carrying heating element 1, is mounted on a thermally insulating portion, e.g. a post 22 of the switch. The trifurcated bimetal blade 23 engages a dimple 8 of head plate 2 directly or through a silicon paste heat sink compound between bimetal 23 and head plate 2 and is secured to post 22 by head plate 2 and is secured to post 22 by a rivet 27, rotation of the bimetal 23 being prevented by a pin 28 engaged in the central tongue 24 of the bimetal. A rod 29 transmits the movement of bimetal 23 to the blade 30 carrying the movable contact 34 of the switch. The fixed contact 35 is carried by a blade 36 which engages the cold end 40 of the heating element 1. Terminal pin 31 mounted on the glass fibre reinforced chassis member 12 is secured to blade contact 30. The neutral terminal pin 31 mounted on chassis 12 is secured to a spring strip which engages the other cold end of the element 1. The earth pin 44 is mounted on chassis 12 and is soldered to a brass strip 45 which is in turn secured to a threaded stud 11 of head plate 2 by a nut 18. Three such studs 11 mounted on head plate 2 pass through holes 17 in chassis 12 so that when nuts 18 or other fasteners are secured thereon, the wall of a vessel is clamped between the rim 9 of head plate 2 and an annular rim 19 of the chassis 12. Sealing rings 10, 20 are interposed between the vessel wall and the head plate 2 and chassis 12 respectively. Spring studs 21 formed on the chassis 12 engage the head plate 2 to ensure optimum relative location of bimetal actuator 23 and head plate 2, despite variations in thickness of the sealing rings 10, 20. The steam actuator located above line X-X in Fig. 4 is optional and is more fully described in copending Specification 1,470,366 the claims of which are directed to the means of mounting a thermally controlled immersion heater in an aperture or apertures of a vessel wall. Kettles, jugs, urns, and pans may incorporate the heater.
