Abstract
In a process for the melt reduction of material containing iron oxide, to give iron, in an electric furnace, powder of the material containing iron oxide is fed to the bath (22), wired as the anode, through an electrode (1) wired as the cathode. Carbonaceous material is added to the powder (Z) in such amount that the carbon content thereof suffices to reduce the oxides in the powder and to carburise the iron melt. In a furnace for performing the process, the inner space of the electrode is connected to a feed device (12) for a mixture of material containing iron oxide and carbonaceous material. <IMAGE>
