Abstract

1467213 Flame detectors CERBERUS AG 1 May 1975 [10 May 1974] 18290/75 Heading G1A In a flame detector, radiation from the flame is transmitted to a photo-electric element via a device which causes the spectral content of the radiation falling on the element to vary periodically. The device may comprise a red filter and a blue filter rotated in the radiation path by a disc, or may be a pair of stationary filters combined with Kerr cell light valves, or may be a single filter whose spectral transmission is electrically controlled such as a liquid crystal or a piezo-controlled interference filter. The flame detector only indicates the presence of a flame when the periodic component of the photo-electric element output exceeds a threshold value. In Fig. 1 the filters are carried by disc D, and the signal from the photo-detector P is demodulated at A against a timing signal from motor M, to give the ratio of the red and blue content of the flame. Provided the ratio is above a given value, a signal is generated at S to indicate the presence of the flame. An electrical filter may be included to restrict response to 8-25 Hz, the flicker frequency of the flame. It is also possible to place a second photo-detector so that it detects flame flicker, the periodic variation of spectral content caused by the filters only being permitted when the second detector indicates flicker.
