Abstract
1466975 Fuses GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 May 1974 [11 June 1973] 20494/74 Heading H2G A current limiting fuse comprises a primary main fuse element 24 of, for example, silver, having a body 32 of a low-temperature-melting alloy such as lead-tin solder in intimate contact and first and second auxiliary arc gaps 38<SP>1</SP> and 3811 interconnected with an auxiliary fuse element 40, the fuse being completed by an insulating core 16 of, for example, steatite or a thermosetting composition including a filler which emits water of hydration when heated, inert granular arc quenching material 28 such as quartz sand, a housing 10 of, for example, glass, ceramic material or glass fibres mixed with epoxy resin, and electrical terminals 12, 14. The auxiliary arc gaps 381, 3811, each comprise an arcing clip (Figs. 4a, 4b, not shown) having an electrode portion 44 which is adjustable, by bending, in position relative to an adjacent fusion point on the primary main fuse elements 24. The arcing clips may also provide first and second auxiliary arc gaps adjacent fusion points of a secondary main fuse element 26, which may, for example, be only one of three secondary main fuse elements (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively, extensions on the arcing clip may provide auxiliary arc gaps adjacent fusion points of any number of parallel connected main fuse elements. The mode of operation of the fuse on lowcurrent overload is schematically illustrated in Figs. 6a to 6f (not shown).
