Abstract

1465773 Starting prime movers NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 23 May 1974 [1 June 1973] 23081/74 Heading H2H A system for starting the engine of a vehicle comprises switch means operable by the gear selector lever such that starting of the engine can only be effected when the lever is in the neutral or the parking position. The gear changing mechanism of a vehicle comprises a selector rod 14 secured to the steering column 12 by means of brackets 16, 18 so as to be movable by a lever 20 in two directions, one which is rotatable about the axis of the rod 14 and the other slidably along the axis of the rod 14. Secured to the steering column 12 by the bracket 18 is a switch 36 which is operated by a cam like member 54 secured to the rod 14. The member 54 co-operates with a cam follower 38 associated with the switch 36 so that the switch 36 is closed only when the gear changing mechanism is in either the neutral or the parking position. Thus, closure of the ignition switch 44 can only cause energization of the starter motor device 46 when the switch 36 is closed. Other embodiments are described wherein the gear changing mechanism is of the "floor-shift" type.
