1462361 Hoods DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 18 April 1974 [19 Jan 1973 13 Dec 1973] 02983/73 and 57941/73 Heading A3V [Also in Division A5] A hood for protection of the head and respiratory system against chemically polluted atmosphere comprises an impervious fabric cowl and an impervious transparent visor permanently sealed at its upper part to the cowl and detachably sealed at its lower part to the cowl, the hood also including means to prevent polluted atmosphere entering through the neck of the hood and means to allow the wearer to breathe acceptable air or oxygen. In an embodiment, a cowl 11 of butyl rubberproofed nylon fabric has a skirt 12 for shoulder-overlapping, a gas-tight sliding fastener 13, and a transparent plastics visor 14 sealed to the fabric at its upper edge and detachable by a gas-tight sliding fastener 15. The hood is arranged to fit over a helmet 17 and manually operable detents 18 afford mounting on helmet hinges or studs. Radial convolutions 19 are normally closed by fastener 20. An associated breathing mask 21 is provided and filtered gas is passed via a valve chest 22 Fig. 2 (not shown), provision being made for exhaustion, and connexion of microphone and earphone leads is via an adaptor 24. In an alternative breathing system there is only one tube, Fig. 3 (not shown). A preferred breathing system when the hood is used with a standard oxygen supply system is described, Fig. 4 (not shown) (see Division A5).
