Abstract
1459032 Preventing vanadium gas turbine corrosion UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 13 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 21125/74 Heading C5G Vanadium corrosion in a gas turbine engine whose combustion products contain vanadium in a form corrosive to hot engine alloy components is inhibited by exposing the combustion products, upstream of the components, to the oxide of a metal selected from the rare earths, yttium, scandium, nobium, nickel, cobalt and iron, forming a stable vanadate of the metal having a m.p. in excess of the combustion product temperature and not forming the sulphate or any other compound (apart from the vanadate) which is stable at the engine operation temperature and whose generation or presence would prevent the additive combining with the vanadium. The metal oxide may originate from an organometallic compound, e.g. yttrium acetyl acetonate dissolved in the fuel to the gas turbine.
