Abstract
1455611 Extrusion filter valve unit J ZINK CO Inc 3 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 00259/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A plug valve unit for directing flow from a source of extruding material, e.g. plastics, through filter means to an extrusion die, comprises a housing 12, Figs. 1 and 3, having an inlet 20, an outlet 22, flow and return passages 24, 26 for a first filter and flow and return passages 28, 30 for a second filter. The incoming flow is selectively directed to one of the filters and thence to the outlet, by adjustably rotating plug valve means 14, 16 to either of first or second positions. Thus the inoperative filter can be cleaned. The areas of the flow passages through the valve unit are somewhat larger than the area of the upstream end 40 of the inlet so that the area of the flow path through the valve is never less than the area at 40 even during adjustment of the plug means 14, 16 between their first and second positions. Adjustment of the plug means is effected by a reversible worm-drive 50 which drives the plug 14 directly but drives the plug 16 via a lost-motion pin-andslot arrangement 54 and gearing 46, 48. Plug 14 has slits 70 and 80 therein to provide initial communication between the inlet 20 and passages 28, 24 when the plug is being rotated between its first and second positions. Plug 16 has vent passages 64, 62, 60 therein for venting filter return flow from passage 30 or 26 when the slit 70 or 80 has established the initial communication. In an alternative embodiment the plugs 14, 16 are replaced by a single plug 114, Figs. 13 and 14, having a passage 136 for selectively communicating the inlet 120 with filter flow passage 124 or 128, and a pair of further passages 138, 140 axially spaced from the passage 136 for communicating the filter return passages 126, 130 with outlet 122 or with a cleanout passage (not shown). The plug also contains vent slits 150, 152 for co-operation with vents 142, 144, initial connection slits 170, 172, and a decompression slot 154 for the cleanout passages.
