Abstract

1452567 Stuffing boxes STEEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 5 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 52720/74 Heading F2B [Also in Division H5] In an electric arc furnace, used e.g. for a steel-making process, ring seals 32 for the electrodes 26 are carried clear of the refractory roof dome 22, by a pivotal framework secured to the roof support ring 12 and allowing the seals lateral play, as the consumable electrodes, e.g. of graphite, move through them. Extension rings 100 close the variable gaps between the seals 32 and the top surface of the roof 22. Annular rods 118 seal the rings 100 to seals 32. Arcuate rod seals (130 Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) may be mounted on top of seals 32. Refractory packing 97 may be replaced by water-filled glands.
