Abstract

1451994 Applying patches to webs; sheet ordering apparatus F L SMITHE MACHINE CO Inc 25 April 1974 [20 July 1973] 18058/74 Headings B8F and B8R Apparatus for cutting patches 10, Fig. 2, e.g. window patches, from a first web 16 and applying the patches to a second web 12, e.g. an envelope web, comprises a first feed 18, 19 for feeding the first web along a first path at a first speed, a second feed 34 for feeding the second web along a second path at a second speed, a cutting device 26, 27 disposed in the feed path of the first web, separate first and second drives 54, D to respectively drive the feeds and the cutting device independently of each other, and a transfer device 28, 29 to transfer the cut patches to the second web. A cutter cylinder 24 has a movable knife plate 26 which co-operates with a stationary knife plate 27 and is driven by a drive D at a speed faster than the web 16. The cutter cylinder has a speed slower than a transfer cylinder 28 which has a speed equal to the travelling speed of the web 12. The transfer cylinder transfers the cut patch to a second transfer cylinder 29 which in turn applies the patch to the web 12 on a cylinder 34. The cylinders 28, 29, 34 are controlled by gear drives (28G), (29G), (34G), Fig. 3 (not shown), and through a drive 54 are driven at the same speed which is proportional to the speed of rollers 18, 19. Cylinders 28, 29 are provided with vacuum ports 28M, 29P and vacuum manifolds 28V, 29M. Cylinder 24 is provided with a vacuum along the shaft 24V. The vacuum enables the patches to be gripped by the cylinders during cutting and transfer to the web 12. The feed cylinders 18, 19 are adjustable in circumferential speed to determine the length of patch which is held on the surface of the second transfer cylinder 29 by vacuum and transferred to a pre-gummed paper envelope web 12 tensioned about the cylinder 29.
