Abstract
1451601 Fuel fired furnace BRITISH GAS CORP 15 Oct 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 41508/72 Heading F4B A furnace, having a chamber 1 through which steel billets 27 are pushed by a hydraulic ram 29, is heated by gas burners 4 at one end and is provided with a cooling air duct 18 which surrounds the chamber 1. Air is supplied to the duct 18 through an inlet 19 by a fan (not shown) to prevent overheating of the walls. Heated air leaving the duct 18 through pipes 20 is used as combustion air for the burners 4. Combustion products pass through the chamber 1 in the opposite direction to the steel billets 27. The combustion products are drawn through an outlet duct 17 by fan (not shown). Valves 21 can allow some of the air passing through air duct 18 to pass into zone 6 of the chamber 1. The inner tube 5 is of metal but this may be lined with or replaced by ceramic refractory. Outer tube 7 is of lagged metal. Outer and inner tubes 7 and 5 are rigidly connected together at their ends but the outer tube includes a bellows expansion joint 13. The steel billets 27 are pushed along skid rails 28 on stub supports 30. The rails and supports are hollow and cooling water is passed through them In scale-free heating of the billets, the burners operate at 50% of the stoichiometric air-gas ratio so that the combustion products are gas-rich. The combustion is then completed in zone 6 by air passing thereto through the valves 21.
