Abstract

1450169 Method of milking E M PHILLIPS 14 Sept 1973 43381/73 Heading AIM A method of milking cows comprising the application to cow's teats a pulsation having two or more patterns of vacuum/air phase, at least two of said patterns being different, the patterns being supplied successively to form the pulsation. A preferred pulsation comprises an increasing vacuum phase a, a maximum vacuum phase a', a decreasing vacuum phase b (not down to atmosphere), an increasing vacuum phase c, a second maximum vacuum phase a", a decreasing vacuum phase d (down to atmosphere) and a comfort phase e. The pulsation has a duration of 3 secs with the comfort phase e of about 1 sec. A pulsation similar to that of Fig. 3 can be produced by providing a driven cam wheel 11 in a master pulsator (Fig. 6) with successive dwells and raised cams 21 so as to alternately connect the output 24 to atmosphere and a vacuum source, and either restrictions 29, 30 are provided in the output 24 and air inlet 27, or restrictions are associated with the slave pulsators. The method may also be carried out by a normal 50:50 or 40:60 vacuum/air pulsator connected to a flutter valve which on each air impulse changes the size of the restriction in line with the outlet of the pulsator. In further alternative embodiments, pulses are transmitted from a cam-wheel to electric slave pulsators via cam actuated switches, and square wave pulsations are produced by electronic capacitors, restrictions again being provided in the slave pulsators.
