Abstract

1447062 Hydroxymethyl-melamines and ethers thereof PRODUITS CHIMIQUES UGINE KUHLMANN 20 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 39272/73 Heading C2C Compounds of Formula I: in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group, are obtained by mixing melamine and paraformaldehyde in the proportion of at least 6 moles CH 2 O to one mole of melamine, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst (e.g. 0À10-0À05 mole per mole melamine) but in the absence of any alcohol, the temperature of the exothermic reaction of the mixture being maintained below 150‹ C. (e.g. 90-110‹ C.) and, if R is alkyl, the hexakismethylol derivative obtained being etherified by reaction with an alcohol in an acid medium and with subsequent neutralization to a pH from 6 to 8. Examples describe the preparation of N- hexakis - (hydroxymethyl) - melamine and the hexakis (C 1-4 ) alkyl ethers thereof.
