Abstract
1446168 Inorganic coatings for electrodes MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd 3 Aug 1973 [3 Aug 1972 36243/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An electrode useful in electrolysis, batteries or for cathodic protection comprises a body having a surface of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and/or Ta coated' in a desired order with at least one layer each of a conductive electrolyte-resistant material and an oxide of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and/or Ta, the latter being obtained by heating in an O 2 - containing atmosphere of a coating of an inorganic compound of the relevant metal. The substrate e.g. of Ti or Fe plated with Ti may first be mechanically etched or coated with TiO 2 , the latter in the case of a Ti body involving etching in oxalic acid and anodizing an H 2 SO 4 /Ti 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . The conductive layer may be Au, Ag or a Pt group metal, alloy or oxide. In Examples a solution of RuCl 2 or Pt/Ir chlorides is coated and heated to give the metal oxide and then a Ta or Ti chloride is coated and heated. The electrode is useful in Cu electrowinning or brine electrolysis in an Hg cathode cell, and may take the form of a plurality of wires welded to a common support and partially surrounded by a plastics rim.
