1443009 Porous ion-exchange resin composiions D N CHAPLITS V P KAZAKOV E G LAZARIANTS V F CHEBOTAEV M I BALASHOV and L A SERAFIMOV 9 Oct 1973 47180/73 Headings C3C and C3P [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Porous catalysts for organic reactions based on cation-exchange resins are prepared by mixing a cation-exchange resin with a thermoplastic material, a plasticizer and water and extrusion moulding the resulting mixture at temperatures above the melting point of the thermoplastic material. Porosity is induced by adding water during mixing and/or using a water-containing cation-exchange resin. To enhance the porosity of the catalyst the mixture may be simultaneously moulded and stretched, and may contain mineral oils, ester plasticizers and non-ionic emulsifiers which may subsequently be extracted by treating with a solvent. The exchange capacity may be increased by swelling the product, preferably after drying, with a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent and treating with a sulphonating agent, e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid or chloro-sulphonic acid followed by a hydrolysing agent. Examples describe the preparation of catalysts by extruding (1) sulphonated S/DVB copolymer, polypropylene, oil and water and treating with toluene; (2) sulphonated S/DVB copolymer, polypropylene, dioctyl phthalate and water and treating with hexane; and (3) sulphonated S/DVB copolymer, polypropylene, dibutyl phthalate and water and treating with hexane.
