Abstract

144,027. Berg, K. A. T. April 12, 1919. Differential or balance gearing suitable for motor-cars and motor-ploughs comprises an epicyclic train which is operative in turning, and an arrangement of pawls for driving both wheels positively when going straight. The side elements 3, 4 of the ordinary balance train are connected by bevel planetary elements 5, 6 carried by an inner ring 2. An outer ring 1 driven from the motor carries pawls 7 connected in pairs by pivot bolts 8. The pawls 7 are adapted to engage notches 9 in the elements 3, 4 so as to drive these elements positively. In running in a curve, the outer element 3 or 4 overruns, causing its pawl 7 to rise out of the notch 9. The bolt 8 then rocks, disengaging the other pawl 7, and causing a catch 10 to be depressed so as to engage the end of a spring-pressed bolt 11, which is carried by the inner ring 2. The ring 2 is thus driven from the ring 1, and the balance gear transmits the drive. Spring-pressed bolts 12 are provided in the ring 1 adapted to engage notches 13 in the ring 2 for reversed driving The bolts 11 are then pressed inwards out of the way by inclines on the catches 10.
