Abstract
1440265 Refractories CARBORUNDUM CO 13 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 28110/73 Heading C1J [Also in Division C3] Mouldable compositions for use in preparing refractories are prepared from 30 to 56% by weight solids which comprise (by weight of the solids used) 6 to 56% colloidal silica, 40 to 87% of a ceramic fibrous filler selected from alumina, aluminium silicate, boron oxide, boron carbide, boron nitride, silica, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, calcium-aluminium silicate, glass and mineral wool, and 2 to 7% of a water-soluble acrylic polymer, and 44 to 70% of a solvent for the acrylic polymer. The composition can also contain hollow spheres of alumina, aluminium silicate, silica, glass, polyurethane, polyamide, polyethylene or polypropylene. The solvent can be water or a mixture of water with methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. The composition can be moulded and dried to form insulating materials suitable for use at up to 1300 C.
