Abstract
1339436 Granulating metals STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS A B 2 Dec 1970 [3 Dec 1969] 57338/70 Heading C7X In a method of atomizing a molten material by directing fluid jets against a stream of said material, a first fluid jet intersects the stream at an angle between 30 degrees and 60 degrees, deflects the stream from its original direction and causes the stream to form a layer of drops spread out on the top of the fluid jet, and a second fluid jet intersects said layer of drops and said first fluid jet at an angle of 25 degrees to 60 degrees at a position spaced from the point of intersection of the stream and said first fluid jet. The fluid jets are preferably of argon and issue from nozzles 6 and 7 located one on each side of an opening in the bottom of a tundish 4. The nozzles 6 and 7 may each consist of saw-tooth slits, a series of inclined slits or one longitudinal slit. The solidified particles are collected in a fluidized bed 2 at the bottom of the chamber 1 and are removed through a rotary valve 40. In another embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), the stream of molten metal is projected into the atomizing chamber in a horizontal direction and the solidified powder rolls down a cooled, curved surface to the lowest part of the chamber. Each fluid jet may interact with more than one stream of molten material, and said stream preferably have an elliptical cross-section.
