Abstract

1339427 Toughening glass TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO Ltd and W G ROBERTS 4 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39100/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division B5] A glass sheet of thickness 4-12 mm. is toughened to impart thereto a modulus of rupture of 3000-3550 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> by heating it to a temperature near its softening point and effecting heat exchange with an oil, e.g. Cylrex or Vacuoline (Registered Trade Marks), held at a temperature below the boiling point of the oil, there being maintained in the oil up to 4% by weight of a liquid having a boiling point lower than the boiling point of the oil, e.g. carbon tetrachloride. The glass sheet which may be of soda-lime-silica glass, may be laminated with a further sheet of glass in the production of a windscreen for a high-speed vehicle.
