Abstract

1338759 Papermaking INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 20 Jan 1971 [20 Jan 1970 5 Aug 1970] 2722/70 and 2784/71 Heading D2B A non-woven fibrous web, e.g. a paper or an imitation leather, is made by (1) preparing from a colloidal aqueous dispersion of a waterinsoluble polymeric binder an aqueous suspension comprising (a) particles of the binder having a number-average diameter of 0.001 to 1.0 mm and (b) fibres, (2) adding 1 to 100 parts per million, based on the water in the suspension, of a water-soluble polymeric retention aid having a number-average molecular weight of at least one million, and (3) removing the water to form a web having the polymeric binder incorporated in it. The polymeric binder may be a synthetic rubber or a synthetic resin; examples are polybutadiene, a copolymer of styrene and butadiene with or without an unsaturated acid or ester of such an acid, polychloroprene, a copolymer of a diene and acrylonitrile with or without an unsaturated acid or ester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, a copolymer of acrylonitrile butadiene and styrene, and polyvinyl chloride. The suspension of step (1) may be formed by adding a coagulant, e.g. aluminium sulphate. The fibres may be of natural cellulose, man-made mineral, inorganic or mixed, and may be mixed with the dispersion of binder before or after coagulation. The retention aid may be a polyacrylate, polyacrylic acid, an amine-epichlorohydrin condensate, polyethylene oxide, a polyamine or an acrylic acid-acrylamide copolymer, and may be added at the headbox when a paper machine is used.
