Abstract

1338385 Dispersing oil IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 183/70 Heading ClC [Also in Divisions C2 C3 and B1] Oil slicks are emulsified and dispersed by the use of an oil-soluble, water insoluble polyoxyalkylene fatty ester of formula wherein R.CO represents an acyl radical of unsaturated or branched chain fatty acid (12- 22 C), R 1 an alkyl or alkenyl radical (1-4 C), n an integer from 2-4 and m an integer from 2 to 20. R.CO radicals may be those derived from oleic, linoleic, linolenic, soya bean, linseed, and tall oil fatty acids and R 1 may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, butenyl and propargyl. An example describes the use of an ester of tall oil fatty acids and a condensate of methyl alcohol and ethylene oxide to disperse crude oil on sea water.
