Abstract

1338264 Grafted epichlorohydrin polymers SOLVAY ET CIE 6 Oct 1971 [6 Oct 1970 13 April 1971] 46425/71 Heading C3G A mixture comprising a) vinyl chloride polymer grafted on to an epichlorohydrin homo- or co-polymer and b) ungrafted epichlorohydrin homo- or co-polymer is produced by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the gaseous phase in the presence of said homo- or co-polymer. Vinyl chloride homopolymer may also be present in the mixture, which may be blended with additional vinyl chloride polymer. Preferably, granules of the epichlorohydrin polymer are grafted by a process carried out at a pressure lower than the saturated vapour pressure of vinyl chloride at the polymerization temperature. Examples are given in which vinyl chloride is grafted on to polyepichlorohydrin or epichlorohydrin-ethylene oxide copolymer in aqueous suspension. The resulting graft polymer/polyvinyl chloride mixtures are blended with polyvinyl chloride and, optionally, (i) octyl tin mercaptide. cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol or (ii) calcium stearate, zinc ethyl hexoate, epoxidized soya oil and a montanic acid ester containing calcium montanate and extruded to form flasks or pressed into sheets.
