Abstract

1336229 Compositions containing expanded natural grain E I ROBINSKY J TIMUSK V R RILEY 26 July 1971 [27 July 1970] 35012/71 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions C1 and B2] A construction material is produced by expanding natural grain and then further treating the grain to stabilize it by: (a) carbonization, or (b) by treatment with a material selected from asphalts, creosotes, resins, wax, latex, rubbers, plastics, cement paste, bacteriostats, one or more inorganic polymers or a combination thereof. The grains may be expanded by applying heat and pressure and suddenly releasing the pressure or by extrusion. Stabilized grains may be used directly as insulating material in the form of discrete particles, or may be bonded together, e.g. by hot pressing, for example to form an insulation board. Alternatively the discrete particles may be used as a lightweight aggregate in concrete. The concrete may contain cement of the conventional type such as Portland, magnesia, high alumina, expanding and regulated set cement and other binding material such as plaster of Paris, bitumens, (2) primary aggregate, e.g. sand, vermiculite, asbestos, slag, (3) conventional additives, e.g. wetting agents, rapid set promoting agents, set retarding agents, plastifying agents, water reducing agents, waterproofing agents, and air entraining agents. Carbonized grains may be combined with ceramics and used to produce lightweight insulated chinaware or high temperature insulating fire bricks. In an example a core material for sandwich building panels comprises 80% carbonized grains, and 20% Portland cement paste which includes 5% asbestos fibres or 10% granular fillers such as sand to reduce shrinkage, and preferably has a water/cement ratio of 0À25 by weight.
