Abstract

1333585 Biologically filtering waste liquid J TYMOSZCZUK 7 Sept 1970 42718/70 Heading C1C A process of purifying domestic or industrial waste comprises passing the waste under gravity, pressure or vacuum through a biological aerated filter having one or two layers of filter medium (e.g. sand, gravel, anthracite) which layers are maintained in a submerged condition during the passage of waste therethrough and in which one or both layers are aerated with compressed air or with air drawn therethrough by vacuum and periodically backwashing the layer or layers. The layers may be backwashed separately or together using water and if desired air. The waste may be passed downwardly or upwardly through the filter and may be countercurrent or cocurrent to the air. The particle size and specific gravity of the filtering material may be different in adjacent layers. In Fig. 4 the filter comprises a tank 1 (e.g. concrete or steel), waste inlet 2, distributing troughs 7, filtering layers 5 and 8, air inlets 6 and 9 and waste outlet 3.
