Abstract

1332037 Seaming non-metallic sheet material COURTAULDS Ltd 28 Jan 1971 3357/71 Heading B5K A seam 5 between two portions 1, 2 of thermoplastic fabric consisting wholly or partly of thermoplastic filaments, threads or yarns, comprises spaced welds 8 located along two lines 6, 7 which are in spaced relation to one another and further welds 10 located between the lines 6, 7. The total area of the welds 8, per unit length of the seam, in each of the lines 6, 7 is greater than the total area of the welds 10, per unit length of the seam. The lines 6, 7 extend side-by-side in the longitudinal direction of the seam 5 and may be parallel and they may be curved. The further welds 10 may be line or spot welds arranged in a zig-zag pattern between the lines 6, 7. In a modification, Fig. 4, the further welds may be elongated welds 14 inclined at 45 degrees to the lines 6, 7. The seam 5 may be formed by a heated bar or a radio frequency electrode, e.g. of brass or aluminium, having upstanding studs thereon to form the individual welds. The portions 1, 2 of thermoplastic fabric, e.g. nylon " power net", are positioned for sealing with their ends overlapping on a flat bed, e.g. aluminium covered with a silicone rubber sheet.
