Abstract
1326480 Coating piston grooves TRW Inc 31 Dec 1971 61012/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A method of making an aluminium alloy piston with a ring groove reinforcement comprises heating a piston blank 10 formed with a peripheral groove (11), Figs. 1-3 (not shown), therein, to a temperature in the range 330- 390‹ F., spraying a bonding metal over the surface of the groove while the blank is in the temperature range, and then spraying a wearresistant metal into the groove while the blank is still in the temperature range. The groove (11), of stepped profile, is machined into the head of a piston blank, and the blank is then thoroughly cleaned and preheated to a temperature below the softening point of the blank material, e.g. 400-420‹ F. for aluminium alloy pistons. The blank is then rotated and grid blasted with cast iron grit from nozzles (12), (13) followed by the application of a bonding metal over the groove, e.g. a nickel/aluminium alloy, using a metallizing gun. A wear-resistant metallic coating, e.g. stainless steel, is then sprayed into the groove while the blank is still hot, i.e. 330-390‹ F., a cooling air jet being used to control the temperature if necessary. The blank is then finally machined, the groove 16 then being able to accommodate a piston ring.
