Abstract

1325539 Welding by fusion FOSTER WHEELER JOHN BROWN BOILERS Ltd 16 Dec 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 47851/69 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] In consumable or non-consumable (with or without filler feed) electrode arc welding of plate-to-plate straight seams or tube-to-tube or tube-to-plate circular seams, an arc is struck by moving the main electrode such that the arc path between it and the workpiece passes through the ionized region of an auxiliary electrode arc. The auxiliary electrode is fed from a high voltage (e.g. H.F. oscillating or pulsed or spark discharge) supply, and the auxiliary electrode and the workpiece or a striking plate. As shown, in welding a tube 12 to a plate 14, a non-consumable, tungsten, electrode 22 is carried by a horseshoe-shaped rotor 16, rotatable on a stator 26, via gearing 20, 18, and is supplied with current and inert shielding gas via a lead 24. An auxiliary electrode 30 is held in a holder 32 so as to be capable of limited radial movement with respect to the tube 12, and is supplied with current and shielding gas via a lead 34. The main electrode is connected to a low voltage high current supply 42 through two H.F. suppressors 40. The auxiliary electrode 30 is connected to an H.F. oscillating high voltage supply 44. A high resistance ballast resistor 46 links the two supplies. In operation, the auxiliary electrode 30 is positioned at its radially inward position, the supplies 42, 44 are switched on and the supply 44 strikes the auxiliary arc between the auxiliary electrode 30 and the workpiece. The supply 44 may now be switched off so that the auxiliary arc is maintained at low power from the supply 42 through the resistor 46. No arc is yet struck from the main electrode since the supply 42 has insufficient voltage; and the suppressors 40 and resistor 46 have prevented application of high voltages to the main electrode 22. Rotation of the rotor 16 is now commenced and when the main electrode 22 intercepts the auxiliary arc ionization, a main high current welding arc is struck. Thereupon the auxiliary arc is extinguished due to the negative resistance of the main arc, and the auxiliary electrode 30 may be moved radially outwardly.
