Abstract

1324051 Recovering copper and tin scrap HORIZONS RESEARCH Inc 23 Aug 1971 39503/71 Heading C7D Scrap copper having metallic tin as a coating on its surface is heated to a temperature of at least 900‹F. in a non-oxidizing controlled furnace atmosphere provided with sufficient gaseous hydrogen chloride to combine with the tin as a gaseous chloride. The de-tinned copper and the tin chloride can then be recovered separately. In the case of copper coated with tin-lead solder the lead may also be removed in the form of a gaseous chloride provided the temperature is raised over 1300‹F. Gaseous hydrogen chloride may be admitted directly to the furnace atmosphere, or in the form of ammonium chloride. Alternatively, when the copper scrap is wire coated with insulation, the insulation constitutes a part, e. g. a half of the furnace charge; destructive distillation of the organic insulation in the absence of air or oxygen provides the non- oxidizing atmosphere; it at least 5 per cent of the insulation is polyvinyl chloride or 10 per cent chlorinated rubber, the insulation acts as the only source of hydrogen chloride required. Other chlorine-containing non-metallic materials are also suitable.
