Abstract

1318032 Mouthpiece-cigarette making- machines MOLINS MACHINE CO Ltd 24 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 32626/69 Heading A2C A system for making mouthpiece cigarettes, comprises a machine for making cigarette lengths and an assembler unit for uniting the cigarette lengths to mouthpieces, and includes a web feed with means to signal the occurence of a join in the web; and means responsive to such a signal and arranged to prevent the joining of a mouthpiece to the cigarette which includes the web join, the assembler unit being arranged to eject automatically any incomplete assembly, so that any cigarette that includes a web join is ejected by the assembler unit. The web may be the cigarette wrapper web or the uniting strip web. Joins in the web are detected photoelectrically upstream of the assembler unit and each resultant signal is applied, after a delay if necessary, to momentarily stop the mouthpiece feed mechanism to withhold at least one (preferably at least two) mouthpieces from being fed to the assembler unit. The cigarette(s) emerging from the assembler unit corresponding to the web join thus lack a mouthpiece and is (are) ejected by known means for ejecting incomplete assemblies. The system may be used for single or double length cigarettes. The momentary stopping of the mouthpiece feed mechanism is effected by fluid pressure actuation of a clutch to disconnect the drive thereto.
