Abstract
1313498 Refractory body R D SHAW and C SHAW 6 July 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 41659/69 Heading C1J [Also in Division C3] A refractory body is prefaced by mixing particulate refractory material with a sol derived from an organic silicate, i.e. an alkyl silicate containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and up to 5% by weight based on the refractory material of chomic oxide, allowing the sol to gel and shaping the body before or after gelation. The sol is in proportion of up to 5%, silica and may be gelled by hydrolysis under amine catalyst. The body is dried and/or fired after gelation. In an alternative embodiment the gel is dried, powdered and compression moulded into a shaped body. The refractory material may be alumino silicate, fused silica, fused alumina or chrome magnesite; the latter being in addition a source of chromic oxide.
