Abstract

1313259 Tobacco-smoke filter material BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 24 Aug 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 39690/71 Heading A2C The material comprises a porous particulate carrier impregnated with an additive having an affinity for volatile smoke acids and aldehydes, wherein each of said carrier particles has a pore diameter of from 0.1 to 2.0 microns, a surface area of from 1 to 15 square meters per gram and a pore volume not less than 0.3 cubic centimeter per gram. The preferred material consists of a polyethyleneimine buffered to a pH of 7.4 with acetic acid and deposited on a porous alumina carrier. Other carriers specified are diatomaceous earth, fuller's earth, magnesite, molecular sieves, polyethylene, polypropylene, and zeolites. Other additives specified include phenylhydrazine, semicarbazide and thiosemicarbazide, and amines buffered with organic acids. Specified amines are 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, benzylamine, dibutylamine, diethylamine, diethylenetriamine, ethanolamine, ethylamine, ethylenediamine, octylamine, tetraethylenepentamine, triethylenetetramine, poly(2,2-dimethyl-3-n-propylaziridine), poly(2,2-dimethylaziridine), poly(2- ethylaziridine), and poly(propyleneimine). Specified organic acids are acetic, anisic, benzoic, butyric, caproic, carboxymethyl cellulose, cinnamic, glutaric, glycolic, itaconic, lactic, malonic, polymethacrylic, propionic, succinic, and valeric. The filter material may be wrapped and the resulting filter employed alone or in combination with a conventional cellulose acetate filter, e.g. as the centre component of a triple filter. Alternatively, the filter material may be dispersed in granular form, on either paper or cellulose acetate tow and encased in an outer wrapper. The filter material is particularly effective in reducing the amount of hydrogen cyanide, acetaldehyde and acrolein in tobacco smoke.
