Abstract

1313134 Pads ASSOCIATED PAPER MILLS Ltd 17 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 20884/69 Headings A5R and AST [Also in Division D1] An odour absorbing colostomy pad or sanitary towel is formed by air-laying a mixture of dry, unimpregnated discrete fibres and finely divided odour absorbing carbon and impregnating the web with a latex binder. Preferably a mixture of 10% to 60% activated vegetable carbon and 10 to 85% high alpha cellulose wood pulp or bleached kraft wood pulp is air laid onto a backing material of cotton scrim, porous paper, nylon or other fabric carried on an endless foraminous belt. The web is impregnated with 5 to 30% of polyvinyl chloride or polyacrylate in the form of an aqueous emulsion, excess binder is removed by suction and the product dried under radiant heaters and then in contact with heated cylinders. The product preferably has an air permeability of 57 to 250 litres/minute/ 10 cm square/10 cm pressure differential water gauge and a thickness of 0.815 to 7 mm. The pad may be contained within a permeable envelope of paper, cloth or non-woven fabric.
