Abstract
1313008 Casting ingots DAUSSAN ET COMPAGNTE 16 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 34570/70 Heading B3F A metal ingot is cast by a bottom- or toppouring method which includes positioning at the top of an ingot mould B before or during pouring a cover A. The cover A is held to the ingot mould B by clips 7 and wedges (2, not shown). Apertures 3a, 3c are provided so that the molten metal can flow above the cover A. The central aperture 6 is provided for toppouring. When bottom-pouring, a charge of exothermic powder is placed upon the metal M rising in the mould and pouring stopped as soon as the metal reaches the bottom of the cover. Pouring is then continued at a slower rate to a level N above the top of the cover. Preferably the cover is of a composition (containing refractory and/or exothermic ingredients) which breaks down into granules under the heat, of molten metal. Lugs 12 can be provided which lie above the level N after metal pouring. As shown in Fig. 4, the cover has decomposed to form a layer 29 on the surface of the cast ingot M1. Metal has a been chilled by the cover to form a cap 25 with vents 28 formed by the lugs 12. When top-pouring, pouring is stopped and exothermic powder is placed upon the molten metal when it has reached a height just below the position where the lower wall of the cover is to lie. The cover is placed in the mould and pouring continued slowly to the level N. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, a cover A1 lies upon hot-top slabs El in the head of an ingot mould. Metal is top-poured over a distributer 21 and enters cavities 15 behind the hot-top slab. This results in chilling a band of metal around the hot-top metal as well as chilling a cap over the metal 29 that the ingot cast can be removed from the mould whilst the hot-top metal is still liquid.
