Abstract

1311519 Apparatus for stimulating bone growth W KRAUS 8 April 1970 [10 April 1969] 16760/70 Heading A5R Apparatus for the promotion of bone growth comprises at least one pick-up coil 22, 24 or 26 adapted to be implanted in a living body adjacent a bone structure 10, at least one slender electrode electrically connected to, or constituted by a first terminal of the coil and adapted to be inserted into the bone structure, a second electrode connected to a second terminal of the coil and adapted to be positioned in or alongside the bone structure and spaced from the first electrode, and means 42 for inducing in the coil an A.C. current having a frequency below 1000 H2, a low harmonic content, and a magnitude giving a current density of no more than 10 microamperes per square millimetre at the electrodes. In one form, two splint plates 16, 18 of non-magnetic metal are screwed to a fractured bone 10, the plate 10 carrying coils 22, 24, 26 on a magnetic core 20 with one terminal of each coil 22 and 26 connected to plate 16 and the others connected by insulated wires to electrodes 32, 40 in gaps 12, 14 between bone parts. Coil 24 is connected to a metal screw 36 insulated from plate 16 and to an electrode in the bone through a hollow screw 34. A coil 42, external to the body, is connected to an A.C. generator 44 to induce currents of preferably 10 to 30H2 and of current density at the electrodes of preferably 3 to 7 microamperes per square millimeter. The induced current is preferably sinusoidal with a harmonic content of less than 10%. The output of generator 44 may be an A.C. signal at a first frequency with a superimposed modulating signal at a frequency at least three times the first frequency. In alternative embodiments, Figures 2-5 (not shown), a single splint plate may be used with a coil attached thereto or wound in a peripheral groove thereon. A capacitor may be connected in parallel with one coil to form a tuned resonant circuit.
