Abstract

1311231 Polyethylene oxybenzoate filaments UNITIKA Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 43328/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A process for producing polyethylene oxybenzoate yarns having a low crimp and silk-like appearance comprises heat treating polyethylene oxybenzoate yarns having a shrinkage in boiling water of from 20 to 35% and a #-value of from 20 to 80 in a substantially relaxed state until the #-value of the yarn decreases by more than 10. The #-value of the yarns is defined in the Specification and relates to the percentage of #-type polyethylene oxybenzoate crystals in the yarn. The heat treatment of the yarns is preferably carried out in the dry state at a temperature of from 140-180‹ C. for 10 to 60 minutes or in the wet state at a temperature of from 70-140‹ C. for 10 to 120 minutes. The starting material PEOB yarns are preferably prepared by stretching a melt-spun PEOB multifilament yarn at a temperature of from 75‹ to 100‹ C. and a draw ratio of from 3 to 5 and then heat setting the drawn yarn at constant length at a temperature of from 75‹ to 115‹ C., suitably by using the apparatus of, Fig. 6 (not shown), which comprises feed rolls, heated stretching pin, draw rolls, heat setting plate and a wind-up bobbin. The thus produced yarn is then heat treated by removing the bobbin and wet or dry heating the resultant yarn cake. Where the yarn is to be knitted or woven into a fabric it is preferred to treat it prior to knitting or weaving by applying a sizing liquid (e.g. acrylic-type or polyvinyl alcohol-type sizing agents, carboxymethyl cellulose or α-starch) in an amount of from 10 to 30% by weight to preliminarily expand and fix the interstices between fibres of the yarn and de-size (by scouring) the fabric after knitting or weaving.
