Abstract
1308738 Vanadium tetrachloride STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 7 June 1971 [10 June 1970] 19160/71 Heading C1A Vanadium tetrachloride is prepared by reacting vanadium oxychloride and chlorine in a fluid bed of active carbon at at least 500‹ C. The reaction may be carried out at up to 1000‹ C. at a space velocity of 700-2500 hours<SP>-1</SP> and with a stoichiometric excess of chlorine of up to 50% over that required for the complete conversion of VOCl 3 into VCl 4 . The product may be a mixture of VOCl 3 and VCl 4 which may be separated by distillation. The VOCl 3 may be prepared by the reaction of V 2 O 5 and Cl 2 in a fluid bed of V 3 O 5 and active carbon at 350- 500‹ C.
