Abstract

1308222 Welding by fusion NIPPON KOKAN KK 28 May 1970 25691/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division E2] In a portable apparatus, for automatic fluxsubmerged or, as shown, gas-shielded, consumable electrode, butt or, as shown, fillet, arcwelding, a torch 4, an electrode wire feeding device, and workpiece-engaging, torch-guiding and supporting rollers 3 are mounted on a common support 27 which is carried, via an angularly adjustable bracket 7, by a carriage 1 motor driven along a rail 5 disposed in use parallel to the welding path, the connection between the support 27 and the bracket 7 allowing free movement of the torch, feeding device and guiding and supporting rollers toward and away from the welding path to allow for irregularities therealong. The carriage 1 is driven along the rail 5 by a motor 23 which drives a pinion 22 meshing rack teeth 21 formed on the rail. The movement along the rail is terminated by the cooperation of a microswitch 17 in the circuit of the motor 23 and an actuator 18 which is adjustable along the rail to suit the length of weld. The rail is supported by two frames 26 at least one of which is adjustable along the rail. To secure the adjustable frame in a selected position along the rail, an arm 37 is acted on by a cam lever 40, against a spring 39, to mesh teeth 36 on the arm with the rail rack teeth 21. Each frame 26 has an electromagnetic foot to secure the apparatus to the workpiece. The bracket 7 comprises a spring band by which it is clamped on the carriage, in a selected angular position, by a bolt 8. The free movement connection between the support 27 and bracket 7 comprises a support-connected block 11 slidable on a pair of bracket-connected rods 10. The wire feeding device comprises rollers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> respectively driven by a motor 2 and carried by a spring- pressed arm 13. Wire 28 is taken from a reel 24 through a conduit 14, guides 30 carried by the support 27, a contact tube 15 and a nozzle 4 provided with a spatter shield 20. Shielding gas and welding current are supplied through a pipe 32 and a cable 31. The guiding and supporting rollers 3 are disposed, in use, in advance of the nozzle 4, and are carried by a leg 33 connected to the support 27 via the housing of the motor 2, and a shield 3a is provided to protect the rollers from spatter. For horizontal butt welding the bracket is angularly adjusted to a position in which the nozzle 4 is vertical.
