Abstract

1305669 Easy-open can ends ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 19 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 26775/71 Heading B8D An easy-open aluminium can end 10 comprises a V-shaped score 18 to define an openable flap 20 having its apex adjacent the can end periphery, a tab 34 having a handle portion 38 at one end and a nose portion 36 at the other end which overlies and is secured to the flap by a rivet 28, and aligned cuts 48 and scoreline 50 extending transversely of the tab intermediate its length forming a one-way hinge, which permits the tab handle portion to be raised to cause rupture and inward deflection of the flap by the depressed tab nose portion, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), and subsequent hinging back of the tab handle portion relative to the tab nose portion and deflected flap back on to the can end to avoid obstruction of the formed opening. The tab remains attached to the opened can end. The scoreline 50 extends across the upper surface of a depressed tab area 46 in alignment with the cuts 48 formed in the reinforced flanking tab side portions. The side portions are reinforced by inturned flanges 44, Fig. 2 (not shown), through which the cuts 48 do not extend. The said flanges merge into a downturned flange 43 around the nose portion and a curled bead 42 around the handle portion. A further scoreline 24 in the panel defines a tear-out portion 26, which is secured to the tab adjacent the handle portion by a rivet 30 and which is torn away on initially raising the tab handle portion to form a vent opening prior to rupturing the flap 20.
