Abstract
1305655 Cooling electrical power units BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 21 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 44874/70 Headings B7B and B7H A towable or self driven carriage supports an electric power unit within a sound insulated chamber 3, cooling and combustion air for the generator 4 and diesel engine 5 of the unit passing through a further insulated chamber 12 to reduce noise before return to atmosphere. Air is drawn through openings 7 into the chamber 3 by a fan a portion A passing to the engine for cooling, a partion B cooling the chamber 3, and a portion C supplying the engine combustion air. Cooling air from the engine passes via a duct 22 to a sound insulated compartment (14) (Figs. 2, 3, 4, not shown), and chamber cooling air B is drawn by a fan (7) into a further insulated compartment (15). Baffles within these compartments direct the air flow on a circuitous route before return to atmosphere thereby ensuring a minimum noise emission. Exhaust gases D follow a circuitous route through the chamber 3, the exhaust system being suitably lagged. The carriage may be towed, driven by electric batteries, or may be driven in an air cushion.
