Abstract
1305221 Papermaking INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 2 Feb 1970 [3 Feb 1969] 4855/70 Heading D2A A headbox for a papermaking machine has a passageway (54) formed by a pair of parallel walls leading to the slice. First and second endless fabrics (18 and 24) of which the second is and the first may also be a foraminous forming carrier are moved at the same speed over the walls (52 and 48) of the headbox and through the passageway. Means (30) are provided downstream of the slice to remove liquid from the furnish through the second fabric. In use, the passageway serves to entrain the furnish and bring it into a state of uniform motion at the speed of the fabrics, so that more uniform paper is obtained. As shown, the headbox has a frozen-flow inlet (16), a rod roll (28) and an imperforate bottom plate (48), the first fabric is taken off at 56. The forming board (30) may be followed by foils, a suction box, wet presses and a drier (Fig. 1, not shown). In other embodiments: (Fig. 3, not shown) the bottom plate (48) is perforated so that limited drainage can occur before the slice; (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the passageway is vertical and drainage occurs through both endless fabrics, which extend past forming boards, foils, suction boxes and through wet presses; and (Figs. 6 and 7 not shown) the vertical arrangement has provision for two different furnishes to make a layered paper.
