Abstract
1305151 Heating and cooling liquids by direct contact AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 25 June 1971 [25 June 1970] 29879/71 Heading F4K Also in Division C1 Water in a horizontal cylindrical tank 10 is cooled by the injection of liquid nitrogen from a plurality of vertically orientated nozzles 38, the outlet end of each nozzle being equipped with a heating element 40 to prevent the water around the nozzle from freezing and plugging the nozzle outlet. The heat elements 40 are connected via leads 42 and line 46 to a timer 48 which functions to activate the elements in accordance with a preset time schedule. Supply of liquid nitrogen from a reservoir 60 to the nozzles by way of lines 58, 56 and 50 containing valves 52, 56, 64 is controlled by a temperature control 84 in accordance with the water temperature as sensed by a probe 92, the valve 64 being closed to interrupt the supply when the water has been sufficiently cooled. In order to prevent water from entering the nozzles when the supply is interrupted, a valve 76 is opened to allow either nitrogen gas from a vaporizer 68 or pressurized air from a line 78 to flow through the nozzles. The upper portion of each nozzle is covered by insulation 41. Water enters the tank through line 16 and leaves the tank through line 18. The level in the tank is kept constant by means of a control 26 which operates a water supply pump 22 in response to signals from indicating points 30 and 32. The tank has a series of gas vent lines 94 for the nitrogen vaporized on cooling the water. The heating element 40 may be spirally or otherwise wound around the nozzle (see Figs. 2-6).
