Abstract

1304079 Extracting copper WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 18 May 1970 23934/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division H5] Refined copper is obtained from copper sulphide or oxide ore (or precipitate) by adding fluxes to the ore and heating to produce a melt separating into a slag layer 21 and a matte layer 22, feeding iron and oxygen (or air) into the matte layer to remove impurities therefrom (e.g. As, Sb, Pb, Zn, Bi and pyrite in sulphide ore) and convert most of it into a blister copper layer 23, then adding a reducing agent e.g. coke or methane to obtain at the bottom a pure copper layer 24, in a furnace 10 using a non-consumable copper-tipped electrode 31 which includes a fluid cooled (passage 34) annular copper arcing surface and a magnetic field coil 35 mounted therein to cause the arc 33 to move continuously around the arcing surface, the arc extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the electrode. The ore and fluxes e.g. a mixture of SiO 2 and CaCO 3 , the iron and oxygen, and reducing agent may be added through a central opening 36 in the electrode. Three electrodes connected to a 3-phase source may be used. The process may be continuous with refined Cu 24 being removed through a tap 14 in the bottom of the furnace by operating lever 17, and slag 21 being removed through spout 13 by tilting the furnace.
