Abstract
1303117 Mechanical power transmission systems F SHIBATA 20 July 1970 [21 July 1969] 35096/70 Heading H2H An arrangement for transmitting mechanical power from a driving machine 6 to a load 8 comprises an electromagnetic coupling 1 including a rotor 2 and a rotor 3, and a phase interchanging switch 9 connected between an armature winding of a machine 7 and an armature winding of the coupling. Alternating current generated by the rotation of the armature winding of the rotor 2 is fed via slip rings 4 and connections 12 to the switch 9 which connects the A.C. to the armature winding of the machine 7 to rotate the machine and therefore the load 8. A field winding of the rotor 3 is provided, with D.C. by a rectifier circuit 10 and slip rings 5. To rotate the load in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the machine 6 the switch 9 is operated to interchange the phase connections to the armature winding of the machine 7. The machine 6 may be a diesel engine, steam turbine, water wheel, electric motor or gas turbine, the load 8 may be a ship's propeller, a car wheel, a fan or a pump and the machine 7 may be a synchronous machine, a cage rotor induction machine or a wound rotor induction machine. The coupling 1 uses a common rotor for the machine 7 and the rotor 3. The coupling includes magnetic members 41, 42 on the rotor 3, a magnetic member 43 on the rotor 2 and a magnetic member 44 on the stator 36 of the machine 7. Modifications of the transmission system are described in which a frequency converter including thyristors is connected between the switch 9 and the armature winding of the coupling for controlling the rotational speed of the load. An arrangement is also described in which a diesel engine drives an A.C. generator for supplying the armature winding of the machine 7.
