Abstract

1301818 Preparation of methoxynaphthylpropionic acid and intermediates therefor SYNTEX CORP 20 Jan 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 31637/72 Divided out of 1300591 Heading C2C 2-(6-Methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid is prepared by hydrogenating a compound I in which R 1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkenyl and R 2 is -OCOR 4 where R 4 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and hydrolysing the ester group -COOR 1 , and optionally resolving a dl-mixture thus formed. Compounds I are claimed per se and may be prepared by acylation of an appropriate 2- formyl-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propionic acid ester, e.g. with an anhydride (R 4 CO) 2 O. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising 2-(6- methoxy - 2 - naphthyl)propionic acid, when prepared as above, together with an excipient are used in treating inflammation, pain and pyrexia.
