Abstract

1301704 Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids AEG ELOTHERM GmbH 10 April 1970 [3 Oct 1969] 17252/70 Heading H2A [Also in Division F4] An electromagnetic conveyer for drawing molten metal from a melting or holding vessel 1 comprises an inclined trough 2 and an inductor 3 for producing a travelling electromagnetic field in the trough and, located between the point of highest elevation of the trough and the highest level reached by metal in the vessel, a gate 14 for limiting the depth of metal in the trough. The gate is made of refractory brick and is adjustable to vary the permitted depth of metal in the trough. The position of the gate along the trough is adjustable but is preferably in the region of the last two poles of the inductor. Heating coils 25 are located on each side of the gate to prevent the formation of an oxide skin on the metal. The field strength is such that no back flow of metal under the gate occurs. The gate permits the pouring of accurate quantities of metal for casting purposes.
