Abstract

1300734 Polymerizing olefins SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 Jan 1970 [24 Oct 1968] 50495/68 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized with the aid of a catalyst composition formed by mixing a transition metal compound in which the transition metal is in a valency state below its normal maximum with a metal alkyl (this term excluding a metal alkyl halide) by a process which comprises forming a liquid catalyst-containing dispersion having up to 1À0 millimole per litre of transition metal, by mixing the transition metal compound with the metal alkyl in the presence of a liquid diluent and contacting thetransition metal compound during and/or immediately after mixing the metal alkyl therewith, with one or more olefins under conditions in which only a minor amount of olefincontaining polymer is formed. In the example polyethylene is prepared using as catalyst a dispersion of TiCl 3 /Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 in hexane which had been treated with ethylene for 30 seconds at 250 and 500 p.s.i.g.
