Abstract

1300789 Heat treatment K OTT [trading as HABRA-WERK WILHELM OTT] and J HEER [trading as HEER & CO] 21 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 60701/70 Heading A2D An apparatus for heat treating a product, comprises (a) an indirect heater in which the product is heated by indirect heat exchange with steam, (b) at least one indirect heat exchanger which preheats the product before the latter passes to the indirect heater and to cool said product after it has been heat treated, the pretreating and cooling being effected by indirect heat exchange with steam, (c) a source of steam, and (d) means for passing steam through said heater 2 thereafter through said heat exchanger. The apparatus is suitably used in the treatment of milk, fruit juices and pasty comestibles. A suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises heat exchangers 2, 6 and 9, and heater 11. In operation a product to be heat treated, is passed from the storage tank 1 to the heat exchanger 2, a gas extractor 4, a heat exchanger 6, homogeniser 8, heat exchanger 9 and thence to high temperature heater 11. Steam, represented by the dashed lines, flows through these heat exchangers and the heater to preheat and heat the product. After heating, i.e. sterilising, in heater 11, the product is successively cooled by being returned through the heat exchangers 9, 6 and 2, eventually passing to a packaging plant 19.
