Abstract

1398030 Grinding wheels HITACHI SEIKO Ltd 30 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 36169/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division C7] A method of producing a contoured grinding wheel comprises forming a profile on a support disc 1, forming a counter profile 6 on a steel mould 3 by an electrolytic process whereby a predetermined space is produced between the disc and mould, and inserting into the space a mixture 7 of abrasive particles and synthetic bonding agent whereby the mixture is coated on to the contoured peripheral surface of the disc as the disc is rotated. The support disc 1 is formed to the desired profile by a diamond tool (2, Fig. 1, not shown) and may be of metal, a mixture of graphite and abrasive grains bonded by tar pitch, or graphite, abrasive grains, copper powder, and phenol resin so as to be electrically conductive, or be coated with electrically conductive molten metal. The disc is connected to a negative terminal and the steel mould 3 is connected to a positive terminal while an electrolyte 5 is supplied, the mould being moved in the direction of the arrow so that the opposite profile 6 is formed on the mould with a space between the disc and mould. The mixture 7 of abrasive particles and bonding agent 7 is supplied to the space so as to coat the disc during rotation thereof, the mixture then being cured to produce a contoured grinding wheel (8, Fig. 4, not shown). The abrasive particles may be of diamond, boron nitride or boron carbide. The Specification refers to a known method of producing a contoured grinding wheel in which the mould is ground by a ceramic grinding wheel and a space is then provided between the wheel and mould and supplied with the mixture of abrasive particles and synthetic bonding agent.
