Abstract
1397943 Release coatings JONTINE PRODUCTS CO LTD 10 April 1973 [11 April 1972] 16696/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Fibrous substrates are coated with a release composition consisting essentially of a powdered thermoplastic polymer chosen from polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and copolymers of styrene, said powder being suspended in an organic liquid chosen from aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon solvents and mixtures thereof, the thermoplastic polymer being insoluble therein at a temperature below 35‹C, said organic liquid having dissolved therein a silicone polymer chosen from polydialkyl siloxanes and polyvinyl siloxanes, the proportion of thermoplastic polymer to silicone polymer being from 1:4 to 4:1 by weight. The boiling point of the organic liquid should preferably be above 60‹C. The composition may also include a curing catalyst. A suitable thermoplast is a polyethylene of molecular weight 1,000 to 10,000, a density of 0.9 to 0.96 g/cm<SP>3</SP>, and a melting point of 80‹-140‹C. In the examples a release coating composition is prepared by dissolving a silicone polymer which is a mixture of dimethylpolysiloxane and a minor amount of methylhydrogenpolysiloxane as a cross-linked aminopolysiloxane as a cross-linking agent and an organic tin complex as curing catalyst in a petroleum solvent and forming a suspension of a powdered polyethylene in the resulting solution. The suspension is then coated on to an uncoated kraft paper and a polyethylene coated kraft paper, the solvent evaporated therefrom and the silicone polymer cured by heating. The coated release paper can be used for packaging of hot bitumastic compositions.
