1396986 Winding webs A AHLSTROM OSAKEYHTIO 19 Oct 1972 48272/72 Heading B8R In a method of an apparatus for continuously winding a web into rolls, the roll is supported on a pair of parallel support rollers and driven thereby with the web fed between the support rollers, an empty replacement reel being placed adjacent the gap between the support rollers and brought into contact therewith for winding a new roll from the cut web while or just before the completed roll is removed. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, the replacement reel 3<SP>1</SP> is supported on a roller 21 and when roll 1 is nearly full a load roller 14 is lifted and a pusher roller 10 pivoted against the roll 1 whilst the roller 21 raises reel 3<SP>1</SP> to just below the gap. Pins (16), Fig. 10 (not shown), supporting the roll 1 are then disengaged therefrom and moved to grip the reel 3<SP>1</SP>. Pusher roller 10 moves the roll 1 on to a pivotable delivery platform 8 and during or just before this operation a cutter 11 pivots and cuts the web 2 near the gap. A gluing device 13 glues the web so that the cut ends adhere to the completed roll 1 and to the reel 3<SP>1</SP> with the aid of a blower device, the reel 3<SP>1</SP> being rotated by contact with the support rollers 5, 6 to wind on the web 2. When the reel 3<SP>1</SP> has attained a pre-determined size, the support rollers 5, 6 are separated and the reel is pushed through the gap. In a second embodiment, Fig. 13, the support rollers 5, 6<SP>1</SP> are not separable, the replacement reel 3<SP>1</SP> being inserted axially between the support rollers and nearly completed roll 1 by a cradle 23. The roll 1 is removed with the aid of an additional pivotable roller 22, a cutting device 14<SP>1</SP> being associated with the lead roller 14 for severing the glued web which then begins to wind on to the reel 3<SP>1</SP> which is lowered into contact with the rollers 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>. In a third embodiment, Fig. 19, replacement reels 3<SP>11</SP> from a reservoir 42 are raised towards the gap by arms 35 and pushed through the gap between the separated support rollers by a cradle 40 before being lowered back on to the support rollers for winding.
